Green, storage cabbage with nice and sweet flavor bred by German biodynamic seed breeder Dieter Bauer and offered to us by Clint Freund. Dottenfelder is vigorous with medium large, firm heads that store well into April. It’s also great chopped and browned in the over with oil and salt and makes fantastic sauerkraut, coleslaw and curtido. There is some natural diversity of head shape from round, oval to flat – indicative of a diverse genepool and strong variety!
Growing Tips
Plant in early to mid spring. Mix 1-½ cups of 5-10-10 fertilizer per 25 feet of row into the top 3 to 4 inches of soil. Plant the seeds ¼ to ½ inch deep into well-drained, light soil or plant indoors in seed trays and transplant after danger or frost. After about 2 weeks of growth outside, thin the seedlings so that they are spaced 8 to 12 inches apart.
